Read This if Work-from-Home and Home Life is Hard

And the last month of 2020 starts today! A hopeful end to the nationwide MCO is December 6th, but possibility of an extension and continuation of work from home is still imminent.

It’s never too late a time to get that mental health check in! It is completely understandable if you have been struggling with productivity and stress. The never-ending uncertainty that each week brings as we fight to get back on track and keep things going have taken a toll. And with Christmas and New Year soon, the best we can to end this year well is going to require our best foot forward.

As some of us are still on a work from home (WFH) basis, here are some tips to effectively restructure a better work-life balance.

One unfortunate side effect of work from home is misinterpreting that you have the whole day to work. For desk jobs, meetings, content curating, designing, and such are all condensed into where our screens are. It’s easy to get lost in the hustle, thinking that little more of work can to be done while you’re still at it. Before you know it, you’ve probably missed lunch, or worked yourself into the wee hours of the morning.

Here, disengaging is a very important step to get down. Taking a shower, eating a proper meal (AWAY from the screen!) or even changing your clothes can do wonders in transitioning from work to home mode. Not only are you inducing a change in your physical movements, your mind will be made to focus on something else.

Exercising and meditating are highly encouraged activities, as both encourage further mental well-being!

Setting spaces

‘Work from home’ means that your home space is now also your work space. Back when life was normal, these spaces would be separated by public spaces such as commute, gym, or dine-ins. But with the MCO, these in-between spaces are subject to SOPs, and some would rather skip the hassle and just not leave the house.

Like transitioning, setting a separate space for your work, home, and especially the in-between, is important. The work space is only going to keep showing you how much you have left to do. The home space is the same with laundry, cleaning, and other chores usually done after work hours. Those in common housing areas might find this step a little easier, as cohousing members can come together for some communal time.

Rearranging

Part of keeping your head clear is by keeping your designated workspace clear! And we don’t just mean clean and organized, but fixed and suitable. This article by Jill Cornfield details how to get in your best productive mode possible. Time and stability for other areas in your life can be made a priority.

Finding that spot in your home away from the pull of zones such as the bed or couch takes a little rearranging of space. You’ll want some comfort, but not too much!

Rearranging also has to be done to your time management. Have a set schedule for the things you still have control over, like when to eat, brush your teeth, and short breaks for exercise. Try to set a fixed time to reply to work emails and messages too instead of letting them crawl in throughout the day!

Celebrating things

Juggling home and work life can make productivity a struggle. And with the constant barrage of news showing whole world struggling with barely any end in sight, moods are definitely on the bluer side. Maybe you need some help to identify burnout, as this article by Forbes notes.

If you find yourself too far down the spiral of out-of-control, a little tip is to start small. Celebrate the things you did manage to accomplish – even something as small as having eaten. An official, concise report on how the pandemic has affected the public has yet to be released, but evidently many aren’t getting over it without some kind of trauma.

To get out of this slump and constant state of anxiety, celebrate the small stuff right in front of you. Focus on ending your days on a high note – at least you got out of bed!

With everything we are going through right now, the last thing we want is to be alone. Social distancing has only made us more aware of how much we need to be around people. If we’re cohousing, the people we live with are our lifelines. Shared living can be a very healthy environment with the right people.

Find motivation and inspiration on how to balance your life by speaking to people you like. Connect with movies, or silly dances to music! You may not know it, but someone will be glad to be your support, or you theirs.
